It is becoming more common that children, from as young as they can start talking, to become multilingual. This is generally due to their parents being from different backgrounds, teaching their children both of their native languages. This can come with many pros and cons to the child life.
Teaching them both languages from a young age allows them to learn the languages faster. Children are known to digest information much quicker, meaning they can learn new skills at a faster rate. This makes it easier for them to be able to talk in their native languages to fellow family members.
However, this can come with some downsides. Children who are multilingual from a young age may get confused with their speech. Merging the two languages together. This can be confusing for their friends and teachers in school settings if they do not know both languages. It is best to establish which language should be used in both school and home settings.
